  Wings of Destiny

  By Christian Kallias

  Short Foreword

Wings of Destiny can be considered Universe in Flames’ book 0.

It happens before the events of Earth - Last Sanctuary. It follows the series protagonist while he’s in the Star Alliance pilot’s academy.

It is chronologically the first book in the series, and it’s probably the best point to start, though Earth - Last Sanctuary is the first book that was created in this universe. Wings of Destiny was written in Spring 2018 after the entire first series (or season) was written.

It was never released to Amazon before this Ultimate box set Edition.

  1

This story takes place thousands of light-years away from Earth. In a part of space where the Star Alliance and the Obsidian Empire have been waging a war for generations.

The missile grazed Chase’s ship, briefly illuminating his cockpit in a radiant blue before it reacquired its lock.

“Missile lock,” said AINI, the onboard navicomputer AI.

“No shit!” exclaimed Chase. “You’re really a stickler for stating the obvious.”

“I’m sorry, Pilot, I do not understand your last command.”

The AI’s vocal sub-routines made the female computer’s voice sound like a mixture of artificial calm and unintended digital sexiness. Something that Chase found, more often than not, disconcerting.

Chase exhaled in frustration. He would have to find an engineer cadet willing to sacrifice some of his spare time to give the ship’s AI a much-needed personality boost. Chase made a mental note of it as his ship’s proximity alert started blaring, informing him the missile was once more on his tailpipe and ready to impact with his weak shields.

“Never mind that, AINI, divert all power to the shields and execute evasive pattern Theta-3.”

  “Executing,” said AINI.

As the missile gained on him, Chase spun his ship one hundred and eighty degrees on its Z axis and took back manual control. He locked onto the missile with his lasers, set them to rapid fire, and blasted it into oblivion.

“Three more enemy ships on approach vector,” warned AINI.

  Of course they are.

“Power redirected,” added AINI, “shield at sixty-two percent and rising.”

Chase took a second to look at his instruments to assess the situation as well as the status of his ordnance. He only had a pair of missiles left, which wasn’t ideal. He’d have to make do.

The moment the enemy ships entered firing range, Chase veered his ship hard, vectoring toward the trio of incoming fighters. Red laser fire screamed past his canopy and briefly illuminated his cockpit with crimson tones. Chase flew his fighter in a corkscrew maneuver, trying to avoid as many hits as possible until he was ready to make his move.

The enemy ships flew in a tight pyramid formation. The corner of Chase’s mouth arched into a grin. He locked onto the apex craft as more laser fire pounded and depleted his frontal shields at an alarming rate. He fired his first missile, then almost immediately after, fired a second one at the same target. The first missile lit up and exploded on the enemy’s shields, the follow-up pierced through them and tore the fighter’s wing to shreds.

The enemy craft spun uncontrollably. Molten parts, sparks, and oxygen spewing into space. The other two ships tried to break away but one wasn’t fast enough; the damaged fighter exploded on its shield, sending it spinning out of control. Chase acquired it, unwilling to let this brief window of opportunity slip through his fingers. He showered the craft with rapid bursts of low-power laser fire, making short-change of what little shields the enemy had left. Chase switched his firing mode to heavy, supercharged laser fire, aimed at the ship’s engine, and blew the fighter to kingdom come.

Chase cheered as he flew through the resulting cloud of dust and debris. A few of the smaller fragments burned on his shields, bringing them down to under ten percent.
